Q: My son’s going to get his learner’s permit and I’m worried that I can no longer get a cheap SR22 quote! Is this true?

A: Actually, car insurance companies like to say that if a teenager has his learner’s permit, he needs to be on your car insurance policy–and if you add a teenager, then you will indeed have trouble getting a Cheap SR22 quote. However, this actually isn’t the case. You aren’t technically required to insure your teenager until they actually have a license. In the meantime, you have it pretty good–they will be covered if they are in an accident under your policy, and you won’t have to pay for including them on it.

Now, there is an exception to this case. Since you have trouble finding a Cheap SR22 quote, it’s possible that you are part of the assigned risk car insurance pool of the Texas Department of Insurance. Many SR22 policy holders are a part of this. If you are in an assigned risk pool, then you are unable to keep your teenage son off of your car insurance policy, even if he does not actually have his driver’s license yet.
